Different types of wind turbines - Which is the best

When we think of wind generators, then we usually think only about homemade wind generators and commercial ones. We all know those huge turbines that are located all over the states, but most of us actually dont know that there is also a type of wind generators called vertical axis wind generator shortly called as VAWT. The typical type like we mentioned before is called HAWT - Horizontal axis wind generator. Although HAWT has many advantages over VAWT and therefor HAWT is commonly used, then VAWT has gained some popularity and is walking behind its big brother.

Advantages of VAWT

Vawt is relatively low and since it is placed on a vertical axis, then it doesnt have to be pointed into wind, which means that it can benefit from winds on any angle. Vawt also has a low point of gravity, which means that it is really steady on the ground and doesnt have to be mounted on a tower.

Disadvantages of VAWT

VAWT - Vertical axis wind generator has also some drawbacks like it creates huge draft around it, so it is very dangerous, also it can only produce 50% of the power that HAWT (Typical Homemade Wind Generator) therefor its not so efficient.

Summary:

For use in your homemade wind generator I would suggest you to use HAWT type generator, although maybe in few years they have found a way how to use VAWT more efficiently and it can be used in your own build homemade wind generator.

Thank You for your time,
Phil
